BORN STOIC

Lord Brahma created Narad from his throat. He asked him to marry and expand the lineage. Narad was, however, born reluctant. His heart longed for liberation alone. No mundane temptation lured him and no bond seeming however charming to others, could touch his austere mind. He humbly clasped his both hands before his father and supplicated,-“O Father of all! Let my elder brothers get married first. When elder brothers Sanak, Sanandan, Sanatan and Sanatkumar get married, I shall also step into their shoes….” Lord Brahma threw a stern glance at his son. The gesture of his elder sons who had willfully not allowed their bodies to grow up beyond the age of five and chose to remain celibate all through had caused great displeasure to the father and when Narad also put forth his wish to follow his elder brothers, lord Brahma could not bear with him anymore. The face of the father turned stern. The shadow of disappointment shrouded the glow of his face. Intelligent and astute Narad followed the message in the eyes of his father yet could not help contain himself from expressing the firm faith his heart beheld. Without awaiting verbal decree of his unconvinced father, he bravely put forth his view,-“When my elders have been allowed to perform penance, then why am I being asked to get into this drudgery?”

Brahma, still did not utter a single word to further the conversation yet the strain at his forehead heightened,  which his wise son Narad could read instantly. He therefore, lost no time and officiously furthered his cause,-“It is strange and so hurting that a father is bestowing boon on some sons and offering bane to another one…..” Brahma found himself not in a position to contain his wrath to this arguing and pleading adamant son and abstained himself from from communicating his opinion.

“Father one who gets involved in mundane affairs gets liberation after billions of kalpas. Lord Sri Krishna alone is worthy of worship as he bestows liberation on the human soul. What sane soul would choose the mundane pleasures, in place of divine bliss, one gets by worshipping lord Sri Krishna? Worldly pleasures are akin to flame of an earthen lamp that only goes on devouring the moths hovering around it. Only a deluded person indulges in sense pleasures. Wise ones know that sense pleasures deprive the soul of spiritual bliss, throwing one into the whirlpool of repeated cycles of birth and death..”. Saying so, he stood still in front of him, patiently yet inquisitively waiting for the response of his progenitor. Lord Brahma had already been upset over his four sons, having been bluntly defied and denied to expand the lineage. They had not allowed even their bodies to attain puberty lest their mind should get enmeshed in sensual pleasures. Having nipped the conjugal temptation in the bud itself, they roamed freely in the creation spreading austerity and spiritual wisdom all around. Narad also longed to step into their shoes. The father had his dreams for this youthful and handsome son who had not been defiant so far.

When this otherwise suave son who had at least accepted to grow up as a capable youth also showed his unwillingness to enter into wedlock, rather flaunting his pedantry to support his decision, the justification given by Narad further added fuel to the fire of anger of  the cogitating father. The very idea that this son also wished to remain a recluse, to please and attain lord Sri Krishna, seemed unpalatable to him. Infuriated by his analogy, taken by the expectant father as a gesture of depravity, lord Brahma raged,-“Narad! I curse you that all your this wisdom will vanish. You will be a beast thriving on sensual pleasures in the company of lewd ladies. You will have fifty ever youthful and ever passionate wives for one lakh years. As a gandharva you will sing and dance with them and your name will be Upbaharna. Thereafter, you will be born on earth as the son of a maid servant. I shall enlighten you only after that. So, now you go down as I say.”

Disappointed Narad melted into tears. His wrath erupted words of retaliation,-“O Father! Please calm down. You are the lord of the creation. You have unreasonably cursed me. Wise men curse only unfilial and defiant son. How do you consider your pure and filial son deserving a curse? ….Please bestow upon me a boon that in whatever body do I take birth on earth, let my heart remain filled with devotion to lord SriKrishna alone. For, even the son of a father as great as lord Brahma is as good as a pig if he does not practice devotion to lord Sri Krishna. One who worships lord Sri Krishna attains Goloka. Such devotees of lord Sri Krishna purify the earth with their divine radiance. All such relations as put hurdles in the path of devotion to lord Sri Krishna deserve to be denounced. You have cursed me….., the one who is ever a devotee of lord Sri Krishna and is fully innocent. I therefore also curse you back now,-“To the entire world, mantra, stotra and kavach to attain you will remain unknown. No one will worship you till completion of three kalpas. No one will offer you anything in oblations (yajna). Only in swargalok you will be honoured, not on the earth.”

The nature honours purity of heart of all creatures. The curse given by son Narad to father Brahma also did not go in vain. Brahma has since then been banished from his share in all the sacrifices performed by human beings on the earth.

Thus as cursed by his son, lord Brahma remains deprived of offerings on earth and as cursed by him poor Narad had to go through the cycles of birth and death and after a long time became a pure devotee of Lord Sri Krishna who is immortal and sings glory of lord everywhere in his subtle form.

Conqueror over Kamdev

Narad had renounced the world and wished to merge into the supreme consciousness. He therefore, made mountain Himalayas his abode and spent his time in meditation alone. Goddess Ganga flowed near his hermitage, ensuring her worthy son of her protection and motherly care in the moments of need. The Mother Nature, being conscious of all and everything, fully supports and sustains her pious children in their altruistic endeavours. Narad basked in the sunshine, bathed and frolicked in the river and ate whatever nature provided him. He lived with faith and longed to liberate his soul from all mundane bondages. Seeing his determination to attain liberation, lord Indra got anxious. He felt deprived and dejected. Thus moved by the austere Narad he called his chief stalwarts Kamdev and Basant to tempt and swerve the meditating sage Narad. The twin most mighty stalwarts of lord Indra, who rule over mind of all beings, appeared around Narad. The ambience in the hermitage of Narad underwent a drastic transformation. Trees got laden with flowers that spread sweet and intoxicating fragrance. The creepers laden with flowers and fruits twirled firmly around the gigantic trees. The birds and insects began to sing songs of love and the entire nature began to resonate with musical lore. The streams of water rushed forth, forming into galloping rivers, inundating their shores as if mad to merge with the ocean. Narad rejoiced in the colourful swings of mood of mother nature.

No desire to seek a conjugal partner touched his heart that felt ever non-chalant to sense pleasures. His longing was only celestial bliss. The twin stalwarts kept on trying their best of gimmicks to divert the continent mind of meditating Narad. Even when prettiest of nymphs danced around Narad, he did not open his eyes and remained steeped in the meditation on the supreme consciousness. Thus, not finding him interested in any sense pleasure, the army of Lord Indra ultimately bowed before sage Narad and retreated in disappointment. Narad felt elated and chanted names of lord Hari and got up. He was ebullient over his victory over lord Indra. His full control over his sense organs made him feel that he had won over all mundane temptations and attractions. Believing so, he began to roam all around chanting only names of Hari and feeling completely blasé to mundane pleasures.

As he, by virtue of meditation over Hari gained power to move in the cosmos freely, he reached Brahmalok and bowed before his father lord Brahma. “How are you, my son?” Asked his father Brahma. “Father! Blessed by you I am now completely free from all worldly bonds. I meditated at mount Himalaya and by the grace of Sri Hari, was not moved a bit even when hordes of celestial nymphs tried their level best to attract me, singing and dancing all around. Rejoicing only in chanting Lord Hari’s sweet names, I remained indifferent to them. Finding me lost completely in Lord Hari, they all faced disappointment and turned away realizing my spiritual status ….” Narrated the triumphant son of Lord Brahma. Brahma was also pleased to hear the lofty story of his son’s grand feat over sense pleasures. He however, aware of history of all such masters began to smile. His smile irked the valiant Narad. “Father! Why do you smile at me?” Are you not proud of your son? What man in this entire creation can proclaim victory over celestial nymphs? Everyone knows that in the past even Lord Shiv was swayed by the glamour of Mohini after the event of sagar manthan. Your son has surpassed even lord Shiv in austerity….” Proclaimed Narad his unparallel status. Brahma thought for a while and then said,-‘Son! I am immensely proud of you. But just give you a piece of advice. Never publicize your spiritual attainments before anyone. Mind it seriously, for you are yet a novice….” As the father counseled so, his comment belittled the self-esteem of ebullient son Narad, who thought within his mind, - ‘Father seems to be jealous of my feat for he too, had been defeated by Kamdev long back in the past. That’s why he possibly said so to me. True, no person in this world is devoid of jealousy that may be even a father, like lord Brahma’. Thinking so, proud Narad thought of fathoming the attitude of lord Shiv to his victory and flew to Mount Kailash.

He bowed to Lord Shiv and mother Parvati and sat down. The affectionate divine parents welcomed the enthused son and asked about his well being. “Lord Shiv and mother Parvati! With your grace I am now free from all mundane bonds. No worldly attraction can bind my mind anymore. I meditated over Sri Hari at the Himalayas for long. My mind is now completely filled with the remembrance of God and god alone. Even the mammoth army of Kamdev could not swerve me a bit and went away after saluting me. I feel so blessed at this. This world has ceased to exist for me, for my only joy lies in the supreme self.” Hearing him say so, Lord Shiv said,-“Naradji! You are no doubt a great soul, worthy of veneration by us for it is almost impossible for any man to win over Kamdev. You have created history by showing such self control and continence.” Hearing such praise Narad thought. ‘Lord Shiv is indeed purer and more generous then my father lord Brahma.

At least he is not jealous of me as my father appeared to be.’ While he thought so, Lord Shiv being a seasoned spiritual master smiled within for he knew that the entire cosmos is controlled by one single master who makes each individual dance to his own tune.  No one can dare defy the supreme Lord. One becomes enmeshed in mundane affairs at the will of the supreme lord and then becomes a renunciant only at the will of the supreme lord. If the supreme lord wills anyone to fall, no being can remain established in the supreme consciousness. Lost in such discriminative analogy, lord Shiv also said,-“Narad! You are now fully free. You deserve such freedom and honour. Where do you intend to go now?”

“Lord! Having received your blessings I intend to see Lord Hari and mother Lakshmi in Vaikunthalok.” Narad said with ease for he was sure that Lord Hari would give him a welcome better then the two lords he had met so far. Narad bowed to offer salutations to lord Shiv. As he did so, Lord Shiv whispered,-“Narad! Please do not narrate this feat before Lord Hari.” Narad was a bit confused. This repetition of the same piece of advice as given earlier by Lord Brahma confounded him. ‘Why did Lord Shiv say so?’ Narad could not understand. How can an innocent spiritual master who is ever established in supreme wisdom and dispassion, say so? Narad could not comprehend. Thus, swinging between conviction and confusion, he, after bowing in the feet of lord Shiv and mother Parvati, flew to Vaikunthalok where he was ushered in by the attendants of Lord Hari in a matchless way. Seeing him entering there, Lord Hari rose up and came forward to embrace Narad. Finding lord Hari behaving so respectfully, Narad thought within. ‘How generous and all knowing is lord Hari! No one gave me such hearty treatment as he has given me. Truly he is the best of the three lords, managing this world!’ Lord Hari made Narad sit with him and washed his feet himself. “Lord Hari I am your son only. Why do you treat me with such respect?” Asked an elated Narad.

Lord Vishnu spread a smile and said,-“Sage Narad! You have attained such lofty spiritual height that I find myself inferior to you in all respects. What man including us three lords has the continence to defeat lord Kamdev for even we three feel incomplete without our consorts besides us. This is the supreme victory that you have attained. I therefore, bow in front of you.” Said lord Vishnu with utmost sincerity and devotion. Narad was even more joyous and effused heartiest praise on lord Vishnu,-“Lord Hari! You are indeed matchless in three spheres. No one can be as fair and as generous as you are! Even deities do not have the purity of heart that you possess.” Thus he eulogized lord Vishnu, for the kind of praise and treatment he received in Vaikunthalok was unparallel.

Having received certification for being the single conqueror over Kamdev, sage Narad sang glory of lord Hari and took leave of him.

Narad was now a single and unique sage, who had been honoured even by the three master managers of the world. His joy knew no bounds. What to do now? What was there to attain after having attained the supreme spiritual status? Such a riddle is life as it keeps confounding all under all circumstances. Narad thought, ‘let me take a round of the creation of lord Hari and see what is going on where….’.

Intending so, he descended on the earth and began to walk in insouciance. Various scenarios amused him and some scenario of burning pyres, wailing relations, people suffering from various ailments and quarrels hurt him. Such is the drama created by lord Hari that no one can change the role assigned to one by the lord Hari, he realized. Thus lost in thoughts he reached a wonderful land where all of a sudden he found everything extremely calm and soothing with no sign of suffering of any kind.

The land was beautiful, peaceful and prosperous in all respects. ‘This must be ruled by some great soul as there is no sign of suffering of any kind anywhere here. All are beautiful, decent, healthy, peaceful and self disciplined’. He began to think within. Just then one graceful man approached him and said,-‘O sage Narad! What a pleasant surprise! You are such a matchlessly lofty saint! Indeed blessed are we that we are enriched by your presence amidst us. Please usher in, lord. You purify the three spheres by your presence. How fortunate are we all!” Narad was pleased to receive such warm welcome. After lord Vishnu it was this land only, which gave him such reverential treatment behoving his spiritual status.

The hospitable gentleman took him to the palace revealing that the princess of the land was going to have her swayamvar. Narad was a bit thrilled to hear the news and wished to see the princess. He found this all so overwhelmingly wonderful. The king named Sheelnidhi and his queen honoured sage Narad and implored him to read the palms of their daughter named Shrimati to know as to what kind of husband she was destined to have. Narad was full of learning and wisdom. As he was made to meet the beautiful princess, he felt greatly elated. The beauty of the girl defied the beauty of even Goddesses Lakshmi and Parvati. The sage found the girl extremely glorious and attractive. As he began to read her palms, he was amazed. The girl had such amazing sings and lines of fortune as it took Narad no time to infer that her husband would be the ruler of three spheres and certainly invincible to all. Narad kept on gloating at her face and forehead. Her forehead radiated brightly and reaffirmed the prophecy made out by Narad after reading her palms. Narad began to think within,-‘God is great. Lord Vishnu had rightly hinted that even he feels incomplete without his consort. Man becomes complete only when he has the right consort besides him. This opportunity is surely a grace of god only, for Lord Vishnu himself pronounced me as above all in austerity and spiritual wisdom. Behind every event and opportunity taking place in life the cosmic ruler has some purpose, not knowable to ordinary mortals but clearly comprehensible by the enlightened souls. This girl should be my consort as I am a single and unique conqueror over Kamdev accepted by the three main managers of the world’. But the thought that he was there to read her future and not declare his own future plan soon crossed his mind and he turned turtle. Narad kept the idea to himself. “Lord what is her future?” asked the anxious mother of the girl. Narad had to expiate her somehow so he said,-‘Mother! Your daughter is no ordinary mortal. She is the incarnation of mother Lakshmi in all respects. Her husband would be the single ruler of three spheres and invincible to all.” Hearing such prophecy, the king and queen showered flowers over the prophet. They gave him the most courteous treatment over which Narad was filled with further hope and aspiration. Receiving such veneration, such blessings from his parents -in -law in disguise, in a way intoxicated him. Soon he finished the formalities and rose up from his seat.
Lord! What is the hurry? Please stay with us till the ceremony is over.” Implored the king. Narad could not divulge his wish and plan with his apparent personality. He therefore, just said,-“King! You are blessed. Do not worry. I am a rover and can not stay at one place for such a long period. Please allow me to move on.” Saying so, he took leave and came out of the palace. Narad was physically out of the palace but his mind and heart had already been lost to the beauty and fortune of the most enticing princess. He longed to have her as his consort, believing this to be the divine plan of the Almighty. Taking the entire episode to be meant for him alone, he flew to Vaikunthalok. In no time he found himself in front of lord Vishnu and mother Lakshmi. He bowed before them and said,-“Lord! As advised by you, with your blessings I have found a girl who is equal to me in all respects. I wish to be her husband. Pleas bless me for this.”

Lord Vishnu smiled and said,-‘Wonderful! Naradji. Man is always incomplete without his consort as I already told you when you visited me. I am always there to help you. Tell me what you expect of me, please.” “Lord please give me the personality of Hari for a while and take away the personality of Narad,” he said eagerly.

“Fine! Naradji. This is nothing difficult. You are now Hari incarnate. Please go and do not waste time.” Said lord Vishnu assuringly.

Thanking lord Vishnu a million times, Narad flew at will and found himself seated in a golden throne with all other suitors awaiting arrival of the princess in the magnificent golden palace that defeated the prosperity of even Swargalok. Fully confident for having been blessed by Lord Vishnu and having been praised by the trinity for his spiritual status, suitor Narad sat in his golden couch calmly. Not an iota of doubt flashed in his mind about the perfection of divine plan in his favour. How can one who is declared a winner by the Trinity even dream of a possible fall in life? So was the suitor Narad shining brightly amidst other mortals. As the time passed, Narad began to compare himself with his rival kings who looked to him ordinary men who had no comparison with him in any manner for he was the certified and honoured conqueror over Kamdev, possessing personality of Hari. Lakshmi could choose only Hari and no mortal, he knew very well.

Thus fully composed and confident of his imminent feat, continent sage Narad waited for his Lakshmi to garland him to be his consort. After all, nothing is impossible for one who is blessed by the three lords. So the prospective groom was there waiting for his matchless bride.

The moment of the precious moments arrived. The princess accompanied by her prettiest friends appeared in the palatial hall. As the precursor ray of the sun moulds the darkness of horizon into the copper light, so did the faces of all the suitors who had been reeling in the murk of nervousness, yet twinkling occasionally with the hope of winning her, turned expectant with aspiration. The musicians played on their instruments the music to set the stage for the event. The talented ladies sang the melodious songs. The youthful maids attending on the princess, showered flowers on her path and bowed before the prospective grooms to honour them all. The princess glided along the floral path holding a floral garland in her tender, decorated hands. Her gaze to scan the eligibility and worth of her suitors regulated the throbbing of their hearts. As her anklet bells rang and stopped near a suitor, so did the heartbeats of all others would as if come to a halt. Such was her charm that almost all suitors were dying to be chosen by her but for the celestial suitor Narad who was sure and certain of his feat in the fray.

As soon as she reached near Narad the confident sage craned his neck expecting the garland in her hand to be round his neck. But see the irony of fate, the bride smiled to see him and threw a derisive glance at him and moved ahead, shattering the dreams of the groom in a single moment. The groom was aghast. His eyebrows quivered and face turned red in awe. How could an ordinary mortal girl dare reject a spiritual master certified as the greatest by the trinity? He began to boil within. When expectations are not met, none can contain the wrath and annoyance to full extent. Some flare up fast, some wait patiently and some calmly plot to take the ditcher to task at an appropriate time. The unfulfilled wish invariably causes turmoil and turbulence in the mind. So was here sage Narad feeling unreasonably let down and fully beside him.

To his dismay even the ordinary suitors seated around, looked at him and exchanged sardonic smiles as if mocking him. Some distant sitting suitors even dared jeer at him with their looks and smiles. Finding himself at the centre of such humiliation by all, Narad began to seethe with anger. All his spiritual wisdom fled. To his dismay, he found the princess still throwing repeated glances of ridicule and rejection to him. As the lava springs up off the mouth of a live volcano, so did infuriated Narad got up and rushed out of the premises. He had no sense of place and time. The fire of a thwarted desire had consumed him up, leaving him reduced to a heap of ashes. Aroused to such an ire and disappointment, Narad began to stroll here and there, his mind failing to decide as to what was there to be taken up and how to ventilate the blazing wrath of his dejected, shattered heart.

For long, he seared and smelted in the fire of having been taken for a ride by the supreme master of the creation. As the time spontaneously erases all marks of suffering once allowed to let go, so with the passage of passing few turbulent moments of heavy commotion, Narad regained sense of time and place. He now wished to know the reason of having been rejected in such an insulting manner. Suggested by the mind, he moved to the lake shining with calm, transparent waters in front of him to have a glimpse of his appearance. As he peeped into the lake to see his face, his eyes failed him altogether. There was no sign of grace or even trace of Hari. What his eyes grasped was a grotesque countenance of an ugly contemptible monkey! Heavens came rolling down over him as he witnessed the glimpse of his appearance in the water. Poor Narad fell down and the whole world sank for him. Such repulsive was his glimpse that even he could not withstand it. How could the glorious princess think of choosing an ape for her life mate? How could she be blamed for his rejection? Then who was the root of this fiasco? O It was none other than the smiling Lord Vishnu who had honoured him so much and assured him of his support in winning her! Now he could clearly see the culprit who had taken him for a ride in such a scathing and debasing style. Narad wished to either finish himself or to remove Lord Vishnu from his position. Thus lost to sheer shame, anger and self - pity he rolled on the shore of the lake, still shining with glistening calm waters, still unaffected by the turbulence seething in the mind of the sage.

. How could he show such loathsome and repugnant appearance to any one on the earth? How and why he had lost his graceful looks, he knew not. His wrath and frustration was at the peak when he found the bestower of boon of appearance of Hari coming towards him with the floral garland put by the bride around his neck. To add insult to injury the lord Hari looked perfectly blissful with the princess who had rejected Narad walking beside him with a perfect smile, displayed over the lips of the couple. Narad wished to vanish from there in shame but he forgot all his yogic powers and stood there as a missile ready to target lord Hari, the bride groom of the princess.

“You! You lord Hari! How dare you take me for a ride so? You made me a butt of ridicule in front of all kings! Such brazen ness! such treachery! O none can match you in cunningness, lord Hari. I worshipped you, leaving behind all temptations and pleasures of the entire world. You only blessed me to be invincible to all human weakness and yet it is you who dared belie all my spiritual attainments and show me such moments of humiliation and mockery! What do you think of yourself? Is there none above you to teach you a lesson? Mind Lord Hari! This Narad is no ordinary mortal! I right now curse you that the way you made me suffer for a wife you too shall undergo equal suffering for your wife. And listen no one would come to help you except the creatures with this ridiculous face that you have bestowed upon me to humiliate me. Understand lord Hari! Is this the personality of Hari?” pointing to his face of a monkey curse after curse billowed from the raging heart of Narad.

“Indeed. Sage I gave you the personality of a Hari only that suited the occasion.” Replied Lord Hari calmly. Realizing the other meaning of the same word Narad shouted,-“Hari means monkey also but could the face of a monkey got me the bride I wished for? Don’t you know even this much?”

As Narad went on unleashing his frustration Lord Hari kept on accepting all abuses calmly. Seeing Narad not coming to stop, lord Hari took Narad in his embrace and closed his eyes. As Narad found himself in the embrace of lord Hari, his turbulent mind became as calm as an ocean becomes after a tide. He too closed his eyes. The fire of anger turned into water streaming from the eyes of sage as he regained his wisdom and peace.

The wisdom dawned upon him that lord Hari was there to rescue and enlightens him only. He became mum and numb. No word could express his anguish and regrets. Lord Hari showered him with affection and spoke in a serene voice,-“sage Narad! You are always honourable. None can belittle you, not even me. I created this illusion only for receiving your curse. I honour your curse. Surely I too shall undergo separation from my wife Sita in the future and receive help from monkeys to kill daitya Ravan in Tretayug.” Such mellowed expression of lord made Narad thawing to such self pity and such loft veneration to his lord that he fell in his feet which lord Hari did not let happen and held Narad in his embrace like a big brother taking away all tension and burden of his younger brother. “Lord! What was the need for this drama..” asked sage Narad even though enlightened by lord Hari.

“Naradji! I organize everything with a purpose. My purpose has been fulfilled as I show the world  how great are my guileless devotees to me and how I honour my simple devotees. I protect them all the way as a caring mother takes care of her toddler. Swayed by the attraction to a girl you rushed to win her as moth hover around flame and loose their life. How could  I see you falling in the same pit after defeating Kamdev and thus allowing you to soil all your spiritual attainments?” the explanation melted Narad into a stream of  divine love and wisdom to lord Hari. He was still a conqueror of Kamdev not just certified in words but in practice too.

significance of satsang

Narad had acquired supreme liberation and rejoiced free access to all,- be it human beings or divine deities of the highest status. Once he was with lord Vishnu and a thought triggered in his mind. “Lord Vishnu! I often wonder how satsang transforms the life of a mortal being. Will you please enlighten me about this amazing truth?” he asked with the simple curiosity behoving an innocent child. Lord Vishnu smiled at him and said,-“Fine sage! If you even though being an enlightened being yourself, seek to testify this, then right now go to the earth and put this question before a squirrel dwelling on a tree at such and such spot.” Replied lord Vishnu. Narad listened to the advice and found himself a bit amazed. How could a nether being passing through the life of a squirrel possess such divine wisdom he began to think. But having complete faith in lord Vishnu, he had not an iota of doubt about the hidden purpose behind the dictate of lord Vishnu. So in no time, sage Narad stood before the squirrel leaping and creeping on the twig of a tree. She had just found a piece of grain and was busy in chewing her hard earned food. As Narad looked at her and said,-“Dear Squirrel! Directed by lord Vishnu,  I ask you a simple yet the most difficult question. Tell me what is the significance of satsang in emancipating a being?” The squirrel looked at sage Narad who inquisitively awaited her to unravel the divine truth. The squirrel however, said nothing. Her eyeballs rolled up and she turned into a carcass. Narad was aghast and could not follow the message of the little being. He rushed back to Vaikunthalok and stood before lord Vishnu with a confused mind.
“Have you got the answer, sage?” asked lord Vishnu. “No. She did not answer my query and just left her mortal coil.” Replied the disappointed sage. “Fine, Naradji!” Said lord Vishnu,-“Now ask the same question to a monkey hopping over the same tree.”

Narad lost no time and stood before the same tree where this time he found a monkey hopping from one twig to other and enjoying swinging merrily from the supple tree branches. He looked perfectly delighted. Narad was even more curious to believe that this being was going to reveal the supreme wisdom to him as asked by lord Vishnu. He looked at the monkey and said,-“Dear Monkey! I am Narad having descended from Vaikunthalok. Lord Vishnu has sent me to seek your guidance on significance of satsang.” He wished that perhaps this creature, being a bit superior to the little squirrel, would throw some light on the topic of his curiosity. But the poor monkey also said nothing. His eyes just met the curious eyes of sage Narad and he too lost consciousness. His movement stopped, eyeballs turned upward and the body turned cold and inert. Narad could nor repeat his question as he found that the soul had flown out of the body of the monkey. Disappointed and a bit annoyed, he rushed back to his divine mentor.

“Did you get the answer” asked lord Vishnu with a meaningful smile. Narad was yet, beside himself. “No Lord! The poor monkey died the moment I introduced myself and asked the question..” he divulged the happening with  dejection. Lord Vishnu however, said with calm equanimity,-“Sage. One, whose heart is besieged with divine curiosity, can not get peace unless properly demonstrated by the befitting person. Please go to a prince born to a king at such and such place. He will surely quench your divine thirst, believe me for sure.” Narad again followed the direction of his lord and appeared before the newly born prince. He found an angelic little boy lying in a cradle with all the prosperity and hordes of attendants at his service, sweetly enjoying his life. Narad was pleased to see the glorious child and got more hopeful believing that this soul, as seeming to be the most befitting to quench his thirst of divine truth, would certainly not disappoint him, unlike the former two ones. After all, lord Vishnu had given him his assurance about this purported preacher. “O glorious prince! I am Narad from Vaikunthalok. I seek your guidance in ascertaining a doubt that has arisen in my mind. Please enlighten me as to how.. satsang can emancipate a …” Before Narad could complete his sentence he noticed apparent changes occurring in the body of the prince also. The little boy stopped his gesture and his smile vanished. His face turned pale and he too turned cold and lifeless. His soul also had left the mortal coil in an instant. Narad was agape. He was confused. He decided to contact the spirit of the boy. As he subtly communicated with the soul of the prince, it said,-“ Naradji! Are you so inept? Don’t you see how even by seeing you a nether being such as a squirrel got liberated from the life of a little animal and got rebirth as a superior being such as a monkey. That monkey too, got liberated from that life by your mere association. The same soul as promoted by the reward of your brief association got the birth of a prince here and who too has got liberation now by seeing you here. I am now fully purified, having been blessed with your third association and now proceed to lord Vishnu having received his message through you.” Said the glowing spirit with a smile.

Narad as if, found himself in the divine aura of  lord Vishnu who had marvelously demonstrated to him the supreme truth. How amazing is the divine plan of lord that even a carrier of his power remains unaware of the purpose and significance of divine marvels, he joyously thought as a beatific smile spread over his countenance.

II HELPLESSHOUSELHOLDER

Gandharva Narad

Once a childless king of Gandharvas who  longed for a brilliant son implored his guru Vasishtha to show him the way to fulfill his wish. The enlightened spiritual master gave him a mantra to please lord Shiv and seek a boon from him. The king sat down to please lord Shiv at Pushkar. Pushkar is a place where great souls have been performing rigorous penance for ages. The divine serpent named Pushkar had pleased lord Shiv here and got the reward of being the ornament of lord Shiv. It was only after the fruition of his penance that the place came to be known as Pushkar. Aware of the hoary past and spiritual energy of the place, the king of gandharvas performed penance to please lord Shiv. In due course he succeeded and lord Shiv appeared before him. As the devotee prostrated and eulogized his lord, the pleased lord officiously said,-“Seek a boon, son!”

“Lord! Please bestow me a vaishnav son, a devotee of Lord SriKrishna.” Said the king and as the bestower of boon heard the specific wish of the seeker, a smile spread over his lips. Being himself, a devotee of lord Krishna, his eyes turned moist and rapture besieged him. “King of Gandharva! One who is devoted to lord SriKrishna is the most capable of all beings. Such a person not only attains Goloka but liberates his kith and kin as well from the cycles of death and rebirth. One longs for a boon so long as one has not experienced the bliss of divine love to lord Srikrishna that liberates the soul forever. I therefore, rarely bestow his divine love to anyone. Better seek anything else!” insinuated lord Shiv.

The king felt unnerved and became numb. His throat got glued and lips parched out of disappointment. He respectfully bowed and supplicated,-“Lord! All possessions in this world are ephemeral. Even liberation is of no value in comparison to divine love. If you think me worthy of your grace then please bestow me only divine love and a vaishnav son nothing else.”

Lord Shiv was all the more pleased to see the unflinching love and said,-“Don’t be disheartened son! You will have a son who will live long, will be accomplished and continent and a staunch devotee of Lord Krishna.”

Thus blessed by lord Shiv, the king felt perfect peace and delight. He then retreated to his palace where in due course he begot a son and named him Upbaharn. The family lived at mount Gandhmadan. As the son grew up, he received a mantra from guru Vasishtha and began to chant it to please lord Krishna. When he grew up he moved to the north in search of the ultimate bliss and wisdom. He began to meditate over lord SriKrishna at the bank of river Gandaki. River Gandaki also known as Narayani had issued from the corporeal form of a great devotee of lord Srikrishna known as Tulasi in the past. She was the chaste wife of a danav named Shankhchood, who having been found invincible to all, was ultimately killed by lord Shiv with his trident only when lord Vishnu desecrated Tulasi after imposing as Shankshchood. As seeker of divine bliss Upbaharn indulged in rigorous penance to please lord Srikrishna, fifty gandharva ladies saw him and found him irresistibly attractive to such extent that they longed to be his wives all the time. Bitten by the intense longing, they also performed penance and soon gave up their bodies. They took rebirth as daughters of gandharva Chitrarath and on attaining puberty married gandharva Upbaharn.

Narad was thus now a gandharva named Upbaharn who lived with his fifty ever youthful wives who spared him no time to ponder over his lord even for a single moment. They all lived in prosperity and enjoyed all kinds of comforts and sensual pleasures.

Long time passed. Once in Brahmalok a gathering took place where deities, sages, seers, yogis and gandharva were also invited. Upbaharn was also present in the gathering. Beautiful nymphs of swargalok presented enchanting dances to please the gathering of august spiritual masters and enlightened beings. Rambha, one of the most beautiful celestial dancers showed her best performance to entertain the guests. Her soft figure wrapped in muslin raiment and bejeweled with glittering gold and precious gems, glided so enchantingly that seeing her curves and smiles, Upbaharn lost his mind. Afflicted by the desire to be with her, the gandharva swooned in front of all. All deities began to laugh to see the love bitten gandharva. Brahma, who was the father of Narad, felt ashamed of his son’s such weakness. Not capable of bearing with the ridicule of his guests, father Brahma cursed Upbaharn,-“You will be born to a shudra woman on earth. No one can attain heights without undergoing penance and hardship. Good and bad times occur alternatively everywhere. Go down and reap the reward of your actions….” All guests pitied the poor gandharva but could do nothing as they were enlightened beings who knew well that time makes every one rise and fall in a unique way.

On regaining wisdom, Upbaharn repented for his weakness. He however, having full faith in lord SriKrishna, accepted the curse of Lord Brahma readily. He withdrew his mind from everything and sensing his end near, began to meditate over lord SriKrishna and after some time embraced death peacefully. One of his most devoted wife named Malavati, having been left heart rent, lamented for him and wailed,-“My Lord! Please get up. I can not live without you. Please get up. Do not torment me thus.” Bemoaning so over his death, she swooned. When she regained consciousness, she prayed to lord Srikrishna and said with unflinching conviction,-“Lord Srikrishna! You alone are the witness of our love and devotion. I have been a chaste wife all through my life. By the power of my quintessential chastity and purity, I dare curse Yam and even Brahma. If you did not revive my husband, I shall curse them right now….” Aware of spiritual powers of Malavati, Lord Brahma began to tremble in awe and prayed to lord Vishnu,-“Lord! Malavati is going to curse us all. Please protect us from her wrath, somehow.” Even lord Shiv cried fearfully,-“Lord! A chaste woman possesses the supreme powers. Please save us all from her curse.” All terrified deities joined hands and prayed to lord Vishnu, lest bereaved Malavati should curse them. As they all prayed fervently, a glorious Brahman boy of short stature, wearing snow-white dress, holding umbrella in one hand and a book in the other hand appeared where Malavati was lamenting beside the corpse of her husband. “What brings Lord Brahma and Lord Shiv with all the deities, here? O Malavati! Whose body is this?” asked the new entrant to the dramatic scenario, purporting to be perfectly unaware and innocent.

Malavati being fully focused on supreme force, lifted her head and having sensed the presence of the supreme wizard, said,-“I salute you, O lord who has appeared before me as a Vipra (Brahman who chants mantra). Scriptures stand testimony of love of a chaste wife to her soul mate. See, cursed by lord Brahma, my husband has lost his life untimely. I can not bear with this tragic separation. If you did not revive my husband, then I will surely curse back lord Brahma along with all his supporting deities.” Her staunch determination radiated all around.

Lord Brahma who stood there with a head hung in shame and repentance tried to persuade her,-“Malavati! Even deities can’t give reward of actions immediately. Things happen only at the appropriate time. No one can attain anything without undergoing due course of penance. Better focus on Lord Srikrishna and attain liberation from all bondages. Such a devotee never hankers for anything else and surely attains Goloka after mortal death.”

The chaste lady was however, not consolable even by such enlightening counsel of the progenitor of the world. The Vipra who had appeared to unravel the mystery, showered sympathy over her and affectionately asked,-“Mother! Tell me what disease killed your husband? I am a physician and can cure all bodily ailments.”

Malavati, pleased by his demeanor, opened out her heart and said,-“How soothing is your speech! Indeed you can surely resurrect my husband. But lord! As you seem to be so capable, please call Yam and Mrityukanya here, I want to have a dialogue with them.”

In no time, she found both of them standing in front of her, as the Vipra made the impossible, possible in an eyewink. Yamraj stood like a rock with no mercy on his face and Mrityukanya, draped in a red attire looked horribly dark complexioned. Even though appearing intensely repulsive, she was accompanied by her husband Kaal who appeared endowed with matching sternness and might. The couple were surrounded by their sixty-four sons who rule over various afflictions of body and mind that eat into the mortal coils in various ways in preparation for death.

Yamaraj took the command and said to Malavati,-“O chaste lady! Please listen, no one dies before one’s due moment of death. Life span is decided by God. I take away life of anyone only when Mrityukanya recommends me to do so. Better seek her explanation about the death of your husband.”

Malavati turned to Mrityukanya and querried,-“Mrityukanya! You are a lady. Being a lady you can appreciate the anguish of a lady whose husband dies in front of her. How could you take away the life of my husband even though I am alive?’ Mrityu replied,-“Malavati! Lord Brahma has appointed me to do this task. I and my sons who control various diseases do this as ordained by Kaal. Please seek his clarification about it.”

Malavati turned to Kaal and asked,-“O Kaal! I salute you! Being an incarnation of lord Narayan, you are the supreme entity.  Please let me know as to how and why are you taking away the life of my husband?”

Kaalpurush replied,-“Who am I? Who is Mrityukanya and her sixty-four sons? We are all subordinate to Lord SriKrishna. You also better meditate over him. He alone is capable of giving back your husband to you, not any of us.”

Thus having got nothing worthwhile and soothing, Malavati turned her face to the Vipra who appeared to her miraculously capable.

The Vipra appeared calm and most convincing. He had made Yam, Mrityu and Kaal justify their stance to pacify the languishing lady. He threw a soothing glance at Malavati and said,-“Malavati! You have heard all. Tell me what more clarification do you seek?” Malavati pondered and said,-“Please enlighten me as to how can one avoid being victimized by various ailments and diseases?”  Vipra said,-“I salute first Lord Srikrishna and then say that sixty-four ailments afflict the mortal body due to imbalance of vat-pitt-cough.One who practices austerity, eightfold path of yoga and devotion to lord Srikrishna is not touched by any ailment.” The Vipra explained to all in detail the science of ayurvijnan that dispelled the darkness from the mind of all and all felt convinced that each individual reaps the reward of one’s own follies and ignorance alone, with the passage of time. One should therefore, mend one’s own ways to be victorious over weaknesses.  Pleased by the patience and faith of Malavati the Vipra said,-“Malavati! Tell me now what disease killed your husband. I shall surely revive him now.”

Malavati was relieved and said,-“My husband died out of sheer shame for having been smitten by the charm of nymph. He gave up life by practicing yoga. I feel now all the more blessed having heard your enlightening discussion. Please give me back my husband.” The Vipra who was lord SriKrishna himself, then turned to deities and said,-“Lords! Please tell me how should I revive the husband of Malavati?”

The deities were so impressed with the Vipra that without losing a moment, Lord Brahma sprinkled water over the corpse of Upbaharn to revive him. Lord Shiv bestowed wisdom over him. Lord Krishna entered his body as his soul and the gandharva got up as if coming back from a detour to a holy abode.  All deities showered flowers over the couple. They worshipped lord SriKrishna and lived happily after that, blessed by all.

The SON Of A Maid

III

After resurrection, Upbaharn lived a long religious life and breathed his last at the bank of holy river Narayani. As cursed by Lord Brahma he was born to a poor maid through a Brahman father. His chaste wife Malavati also shed her mortal coil and took birth as a princess to a king named Srinjay. Being pure to the chore, she harboured the memory of her past life. In this birth also she longed to wed only Upbaharn.

In the state of Kanyakubj ruled a kind named Durmil whose wife Kalavati was barren. As the couple intensely longed for a son, the husband advised his wife to obtain a son from a sacred seer. One son of sage Kashyap named Narad performed hard penance in a lonely forest where Kalvati spotted him and felt instantly attracted to him to fulfill her wish of having a son. She began to chalk out a strategy to please the austere seer in her mind and waited upon him reverentially. As the seer opened his eyes after meditation,  a ray of hope beamed in her mind. She tried to express her desire by offering herself at his service. Her inticing smile to the austere seer, however failed to influence him and he sternly rebuked her,saying-“O desireous woman!Whose wife are you? What brigns you here?”

Kalavati got nervous to see his shining face and rejecting looks. She somehow mustered courage and put forth her wish,-“O great Soul! I am the wife of king Durmil. Only with the permission of my husband have I reached here to seek your blessings. Be assured that you will earn no sin by fulfilling the wish of my heart that is with the consent of my husband…

The continent seer however got angry and thundered back,-“ A husband who offeres his wife to another man is looked down upon by the wife, proclaim Vedas. When he has sent you to me then how will he accept you back? A Brahman who accepts the wife of a shudra turns chandaal and inevitably goes to hell..”

Saying so, he wore upon him a stoic silence that unnerved the disappointed woman. Rooted to the earth, she felt her throat dried and tongue glued to the palate leaving her unable to utter a single word further.

Though the circumstances augured against her, as ordained by the divine power  Menaka the most beautiful celestial nymph flew through the sky, a mere glimpse of which threw a serge of excitement in the mind of the holy man. However hard he tried to control his mind but the semen dripped down his loins. The lady drowning in despair got a ray of hope and lost no time in whetting herself. She bent down and licked the seed containing soul of Upbaharn. She then saluted the austere sage and went back to her husband who thanked heavens for having carried out the task in such a miraculous way.

Having sensed the happening of the future by merely looking at her he sad,-“You are endowed with the seed of a vaishnav saint. Being pure and pious, you are sure to beget a great son who will surely redeem our hundreds of generations by his pious actions. To ensure his growth in a sacred surrounding you should stay with pious people now..”

He then asked her to go to live with holy sages and after giving away all his wealth to brahmans and destitute, renounced the mundane world. He made holy land of Badrikashram his home andbegan to practice limbs of yoga and thus gave up life in due course.

Kalavati who was still staying with him had no home or hearth left to stay and bemoaned her husband’s such untimely departure. She was spotted by sages who took pity on her and took her with them to take her care. He treated her as his daughter and she served him by doing household chores. At the opportune time she gave birth to a glorious son whose bright aura amazed everyone. The boy grew up with the holy men and imbibed all their virtues spontaneously. His traits pleased the holy men. Even when called by the mother to have food he would reluctantly utter,-“Mother! I am worshipping God.” As if hunger never touched him though.

His mother named him Narad only after his biological  father.

When Narad was around five, a group of realized saints visited the abode of his mother and mother reverentially put her devout son to attend the rare saints. His heart found a great satisfaction when the saints especially offered him their leftover meals the taste of which filled the heart of innocent boy with divine devotion to Lord Krishna. Pleased by the conduct and demeanour of the docile and devoted boy, a saint gave him mantradiksha to invoke and kindle divine love in him.

Not much time elapsed when a snake ended the life of his poor mother. Even though a boy, the divine soul of Narad did not lament much for the untimely demise of his mother and rather believed in his heart that this too was a blessing in disguise to him as this event had sat him free from the mundane bond of motherly attachment. Left all alone by the divine grace, the lonely soul began to indulge in divine romance by remembering his lord SriKrishna peacefully and unconstructively. Having been instructed by his mantra guru to practice his mantra and pray to the god in solitude to grave him, Narad had no second thought or any other desire except to please Lord Srikrishna and have his vision. His penance continued in a lonely forest under a auspicious tree of peepal. Thus passed a long time ranging in thousands of human years. The grace of lord had sat him free of hunger and thirst and he felt ever energized and blissful. No mundane trouble touched his body or mind and time passed as if being nonexistent and meaningless. At last his lord was pleased. The worthy devotee was blessed with the most inebriating vision of Lord Krishna accompanied by his eternal companions,- Lord Brahma, Lord Shiv and Lord Vishnu. The evanescent appearance of Lord Krishna who looked enormously charming and beguiling put Narad in an inert state of existence out of bewilderment. He was driven dumb and stupefied. He forgot how to meditate and began to wail like a nascent baby hankering for his mother gone away suddenly, depriving the baby of her warmth and feed. Though he found not the vision again to soothe his nerves yet a voice did enter his ears after a while, -“This vision will not recur. A yogi who is not fully purged and sanctified, can’t see this. Only after shedding this mortal coil shall you have this vision again.”

Hearing the divine insinuation, Narad began to sob uncontrollably. When time healed his heart, he regained poise and began to lead a purer life. In due course he died and  thus redeemed from the curse of Lord Brahma, merged peacefully in the supreme divine light.
